Hemagglutinin (HA) is a surface glycoprotein on influenza A viruses, specifically the H1 subtype in this case. It mediates viral entry into host cells through receptor binding and membrane fusion. HA is a key target for neutralizing antibodies and is the primary antigen used in influenza vaccines. Its high variability due to antigenic drift and shift contributes to seasonal epidemics and pandemic potential.
Vaccines induce neutralizing antibodies against HA, preventing receptor binding and viral entry. NA inhibitors prevent the release of newly formed virions from infected cells. Blocking viral entry, for example with fusion inhibitors.
