Hemagglutinin (HA) is a major antigenic glycoprotein found on the surface of influenza A viruses, including the H3N2 subtype. It plays a central role in viral infectivity and immune recognition. HA binds to sialic acid-containing receptors on host cell surfaces, determining host specificity and initiating infection. After endocytosis into the host cell, acidic pH in endosomes triggers conformational changes in HA that mediate fusion between viral and cellular membranes, allowing release of the viral genome into the cytoplasm. HA is the primary target for neutralizing antibodies. Its antigenic variability underlies both seasonal epidemics (antigenic drift) and pandemics (antigenic shift).
