Overview

Hematopoietic stem cell regeneration refers to the restoration and repopulation of the hematopoietic (blood-forming) system by hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs), which reside in the bone marrow and are characterized by their capacity for both self-renewal and differentiation into all lineages of mature blood and immune cells[3][5][9]. HSCs can be mobilized from the bone marrow into the blood and harvested for transplantation, where they are used in the treatment of hematological malignancies, bone marrow failure syndromes, immune deficiencies, and other serious disorders[1][2][7]. Factors regulating HSC regeneration include intrinsic properties (such as epigenetic and genetic regulation), the bone marrow microenvironment ("niche"), and extrinsic signals (cytokines, growth factors, environmental stressors)[3][4][6][8]. Research into HSC regeneration underpins many advances in regenerative medicine and transplantation but is not itself a single druggable target or receptor.
