Overview

Heme polymerization in Plasmodium species, particularly *Plasmodium falciparum*, is a critical biological process that allows the malaria parasite to survive within red blood cells. During its intraerythrocytic stage, the parasite digests host hemoglobin to obtain amino acids for growth. This digestion releases free heme (ferriprotoporphyrin IX), which is highly toxic due to its ability to generate reactive oxygen species and disrupt cellular membranes. To avoid toxicity, Plasmodium rapidly detoxifies free heme by converting it into an insoluble crystalline pigment called hemozoin (also known as β-hematin).
