Overview

Hemoglobin (oxidized) refers to hemoglobin in which the iron atom within its heme group is in a higher oxidation state, typically ferric (Fe3+) or, less commonly, ferryl (Fe4+). In its oxidized forms, hemoglobin loses its ability to bind and transport oxygen efficiently. Accumulation of oxidized forms like methemoglobin not only impairs tissue oxygen delivery but also promotes oxidative damage through ROS production and release of toxic free hemin. These processes are relevant both physiologically for redox balance control and pathologically during diseases involving increased oxidative stress or massive cell lysis.
