Heparan sulfate proteoglycans (HSPGs) are a family of complex carbohydrates present on cell surfaces and in the extracellular matrix. They serve as initial attachment receptors for Human Papillomavirus (HPV). Blocking the interaction between HPV's L1 capsid protein and HSPGs prevents viral entry, making HSPG binding a therapeutic target for antiviral strategies. Inhibitors or antibodies targeting this interaction can potentially prevent persistent HPV infections.
