HiNF-P is a zinc finger transcription factor that functions as a critical regulator of histone gene transcription during the S phase of the cell cycle. It forms a complex with co-activator NPAT (nuclear protein, ataxia-telangiectasia locus), which is phosphorylated by cyclin E-CDK2 at the G1/S transition. The HiNF-P/NPAT complex coordinates expression from multiple histone H4 genes and, by extension, is involved in the tightly controlled coupling of DNA replication and chromatin assembly. Proper function of HiNF-P and NPAT is essential for cell cycle progression and normal cell proliferation; disruptions contribute to oncogenic processes and genome instability. The input "histone cell cycle regulator" is a functional description, not a canonical molecule/receptor name, and most accurately refers to the HiNF-P/NPAT regulatory axis in mammals, or Spt21/Spt10 in yeast, depending on context.
