The HIV-1 envelope glycoprotein trimer (Env) is a complex, metastable structure on the surface of the human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1). It is responsible for mediating viral entry into host cells and serves as the sole virus-specific target for neutralizing antibodies. The V2 apex refers specifically to a quaternary epitope located at the tip formed by convergence of V2 loops from all three gp120 protomers in the native trimeric structure. The V2 apex is considered one of several major sites targeted by bnAbs capable of neutralizing diverse HIV strains.
