HLA-A*02 is a specific allele group of the HLA-A gene, which encodes the alpha (α) chain of a human leukocyte antigen (HLA) class I molecule. These molecules are critical components of the immune system, responsible for presenting endogenous peptide antigens to CD8+ cytotoxic T cells. The presented peptide-HLA complex is recognized by T-cell receptors on CD8+ cytotoxic T lymphocytes, triggering immune responses against infected or abnormal cells such as cancerous ones. Typing for HLA-A*02 is routinely performed before organ transplantation to minimize rejection risk. Polymorphisms determine peptide-binding specificity and serotype recognition. It is expressed on virtually all nucleated cells.
