Overview

HLA-F antisense RNA 1 (HLA-F-AS1) is a long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) transcribed from the antisense strand of the HLA-F gene locus. It does not encode a protein product but may regulate expression of the HLA-F gene or other nearby loci through epigenetic or transcriptional mechanisms. Antisense lncRNAs like HLA-F-AS1 have roles in gene silencing, chromatin modification, transcript stability, or transcriptional interference. There is some evidence that HLA-F-AS1 may be implicated in cancer and possibly in immune regulation, but its precise cellular and disease functions remain under investigation. No therapeutic drugs, biomarkers, or direct clinical applications for HLA-F-AS1 have been established to date. Additional clarification: - HLA-F-AS1 is not a canonical therapeutic target such as a receptor, enzyme, transporter, or transcription factor, but a lncRNA, which are increasingly studied as disease regulators and potential future targets. - Multiple research studies link HLA-F-AS1 with cancer (especially as a prognostic biomarker), but evidence for direct drug targeting is lacking. - Most published information focuses on the protein-coding HLA-F gene; details for HLA-F-AS1 are sparser, but the lncRNA's function is distinct from HLA-F protein and should not be conflated with it.
