Overview

Host proteins, growth factors, and extracellular matrix (ECM) components refers to a broad assembly of biological molecules essential for cellular structure and communication. Host proteins are endogenous proteins that play roles in normal physiology but can also be exploited by viruses or bacteria during infection (NCBI, 2023). Growth factors are signaling molecules, such as EGF or VEGF, that stimulate cellular growth and survival by activating specific cell-surface receptors (StatPearls, 2023). The ECM is a non-cellular three-dimensional macromolecular network composed of collagens, proteoglycans, and glycoproteins that provide structural support and regulate cell behavior (Nature Education, 2014). Because this term aggregates thousands of distinct molecules with disparate functions, it does not constitute a single therapeutic target. In drug development, specific components within these categories are targeted individually to treat conditions like cancer, where growth factor signaling is often dysregulated, or fibrosis, which involves excessive ECM deposition (PubMed, 2022).
