Overview

HTR2A antisense RNA 1 (HTR2A-AS1) is a long non-coding RNA gene located in the *HTR2A* locus on chromosome 13, transcribed from the strand opposite to the serotonin 2A receptor gene. *HTR2A-AS1* contains multiple exons, some overlapping with the exons of *HTR2A*, and gives rise to alternatively spliced isoforms detectable in tissues such as brain and testes. While it does not encode a protein product, evidence suggests that HTR2A-AS1 may regulate the expression and splicing of the *HTR2A* gene (which encodes the serotonin 2A receptor) through sequence overlap and possibly RNA-RNA interactions. Its expression and splicing are influenced by common genetic variants (e.g., rs6311 and rs6313), which also affect *HTR2A* transcript isoforms. The exact molecular and physiological functions of HTR2A-AS1 remain to be clarified, and no known drugs or direct disease associations are established for HTR2A-AS1 itself, though modulation of its expression may impact serotonin receptor biology

03

Biological functions

Regulation of HTR2A gene expression (likely by transcriptional and post-transcriptional mechanisms)Epigenetic and chromatin modification (lncRNAs often function in this manner)Alternative splicing regulation (overlapping exons suggest roles in alternative splicing of HTR2A)Other
04

Disease associations

Other (potential association with phenotypes or diseases modulated by HTR2A expression, per genetic association studies, but the direct disease role of HTR2A-AS1 remains unestablished)
05

Biomarkers

rs6311 and rs6313 (genetic variants/SNPs associated with HTR2A-AS1 and HTR2A expression; may serve as research biomarkers for transcript abundance and isoform regulation in studies—not clinical biomarkers yet)
