Human Immunodeficiency Virus Type 1 Antigen (Gag p17) (p17)

Target
p17
Molecular classification
Retroviral matrix protein

Overview

The HIV-1 Gag p17 protein, also known as the matrix protein p17 or MA, is a structural component of the human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1). It is essential for virus particle assembly and plays roles in viral replication and immune modulation. Extracellular p17 deregulates functions in various immune cells and promotes T-cell proliferation and proinflammatory cytokine release after binding cellular receptors such as HSPGs and chemokine receptors CXCR1/CXCR2.
