The human papillomavirus (HPV) early proteins (E1, E2, E4, E5, E6, and E7) are a group of regulatory proteins essential for the HPV lifecycle. They play crucial roles in viral replication, transcription, cell cycle manipulation, and immune evasion. Specifically, E1 is a helicase that initiates viral DNA replication. E2 regulates viral gene transcription. E4 modulates cell cycle progression and disrupts the cytoskeleton. E5 alters cell signaling pathways. E6 and E7 are oncoproteins that promote cellular transformation by targeting key tumor suppressor proteins like p53 and pRb, respectively.
