Overview

The Human papillomavirus type 31 (HPV-31) L1 major capsid protein is the primary structural component of the HPV-31 virion, a high-risk genotype significantly associated with cervical, vulvar, and anal cancers (Source: UniProt P17388; PubMed: 25773508). This protein has the intrinsic capacity to self-assemble into virus-like particles (VLPs) that are morphologically similar to the native virus but lack the viral genome, making them ideal for vaccine development (Source: NIH/NCI). Biologically, the L1 protein mediates the initial attachment of the virus to the host cell's basement membrane and its subsequent entry into basal keratinocytes (Source: PubMed: 23015966). In clinical practice, recombinant HPV-31 L1 VLPs are a critical component of the 9-valent HPV vaccine (Gardasil 9), which induces high titers of neutralizing antibodies (Source: FDA Gardasil 9 Label). These antibodies specifically target the L1 protein to block viral infection, thereby preventing the development of HPV-31-related pre-cancerous lesions and malignancies.
