Human papillomavirus type 31 major capsid protein (L1)

Molecular classification
Structural protein, Capsid protein
01

Overview

The L1 protein is the major capsid protein of Human papillomavirus type 31 (HPV-31), a high-risk HPV associated with cervical and other anogenital cancers. L1 is essential for viral assembly, infectivity, and immunogenicity. Recombinant L1 can self-assemble into virus-like particles (VLPs) that closely mimic native virions but lack viral DNA, making them safe for vaccine use. L1 VLPs are used as antigens in prophylactic vaccines such as Gardasil 9. These vaccines induce neutralizing antibodies that prevent infection by blocking viral entry into host cells.
