Overview

The Human papillomavirus type 6 (HPV6) L1 capsid protein is the primary structural component of the HPV6 virion, a low-risk genotype primarily associated with benign lesions (UniProt: P03101). This protein can self-assemble into non-infectious virus-like particles (VLPs) that mimic the native virus's structure (PubMed: 11517016). Biologically, the L1 protein is responsible for binding to host cell surface receptors, such as heparan sulfate proteoglycans, to facilitate viral entry into basal keratinocytes (PubMed: 15170628). In clinical practice, HPV6 L1 is the target antigen for prophylactic vaccines like Gardasil and Gardasil 9, which are designed to prevent anogenital warts and recurrent respiratory papillomatosis (FDA: Gardasil Label). These vaccines induce a robust humoral immune response, generating neutralizing antibodies that prevent the virus from establishing an infection (StatPearls: HPV Vaccination). However, these L1-based interventions are strictly prophylactic and do not provide therapeutic benefits for individuals already infected with the virus.
