Overview

Hydatidiform mole associated and imprinted (HYMAI) is a long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) gene, paternally expressed and located within the 6q24 chromosomal domain. HYMAI is notable for its epigenetic regulation through genomic imprinting—it is differentially methylated and expressed only from the paternal allele. Overexpression of HYMAI, often occurring alongside the protein-coding gene PLAG1/PLAGL1 (ZAC), is strongly linked to transient neonatal diabetes mellitus (TNDM), a rare disorder causing impaired insulin secretion and significant growth failure in newborns. HYMAI’s precise molecular function remains incompletely characterized, but it likely contributes to chromatin structure, gene expression regulation, and cellular developmental processes in pancreatic endocrine cells. There are no known drugs that directly target HYMAI, and it is not considered a therapeutic target such as a receptor or enzyme, but serves as an important molecule in the study of imprinting disorders and epigenetic regulation[5][7][3][1].
