Hydroxy-delta-5-steroid dehydrogenase, 3 beta, pseudogene 2 (HSD3BP2) is a member of the 3-beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase pseudogene family. Unlike the true HSD3B isoenzyme genes (which encode enzymes essential in steroid biosynthesis), HSD3BP2 is classified as a pseudogene—meaning it is a non-functional segment of DNA resembling a gene but not producing a functional protein. It does not catalyze any biochemical reactions and has not been described as playing a role in disease pathology, pharmacology, or therapeutics[7]. No drugs act on HSD3BP2, and it is not used as a marker for disease or therapeutic monitoring. Pseudogenes like HSD3BP2 typically arise by gene duplication or retrotransposition events and lose the coding capacity due to mutations, leading to the abolition of the enzymatic or binding function characteristic of their active gene relatives[7]. HSD3BP2 is related by sequence to functional enzymes in the steroid biosynthetic pathway—specifically the 3-beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase/delta-5-delta-4 isomerase family, which is vital for hormone biosynthesis—but itself has no protein product and no known physiological function. Functional family members such as 3β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase type I and II are true enzymes involved in steroid hormone biosynthesis and are considered drug targets and disease genes[7]. HSD3BP2, as a pseudogene, does not share these properties. If a functional target was intended, the correct entries would reference active family members such as hydroxy-delta-5-steroid dehydrogenase, 3 beta- and steroid delta-isomerase 1 (HSD3B1) or 2 (HSD3B2)[7].
