Hydroxypropyl guar (HP-guar) is a modified natural polysaccharide used in artificial tear formulations to stabilize the tear film in patients with dry eye disease. It forms a gel matrix on the ocular surface upon contact with tear components, improving lubrication, prolonging retention time, and reducing evaporation.
In situ gel formation triggered by borate ions and divalent cations present in tears, resulting in a cross-linked matrix that adheres to the ocular surface, prolonging retention time of lubricants and demulcents.
