Overview

The hypoglossal motor nucleus (HMN) is a cranial nerve nucleus located within the medulla oblongata that contains the cell bodies of lower motor neurons responsible for innervating the muscles of the tongue (StatPearls: Neuroanatomy, Hypoglossal Nerve; Wikipedia: Hypoglossal nucleus). It plays a vital role in coordinating complex motor tasks such as speech, mastication, and swallowing, as well as maintaining the patency of the upper airway during the respiratory cycle (StatPearls: Neuroanatomy, Hypoglossal Nerve; PubMed: PMC2713364). In the context of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), the HMN is a key site of interest because its reduced activity during sleep leads to the relaxation of the genioglossus muscle and subsequent airway collapse (PubMed: PMC2713364; Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine: 10.5664/jcsm.10490).
