Overview

The immune system can be broadly activated by pathogens through molecular mimicry, where pathogen-derived molecules share structural or sequence similarities with host molecules. This cross-reactivity can lead to immune evasion by the pathogen and, in some cases, trigger autoimmune diseases. While molecular mimicry expands antigen recognition capacity, it also increases the risk of collateral damage via autoimmunity if tolerance mechanisms fail.
