Immune system modulation via induction of tolerance to allergens from *Phleum pratense* (timothy grass) is a therapeutic strategy employed in allergen-specific immunotherapy (AIT). This approach aims to reduce allergic responses by gradually training the immune system to tolerate specific allergens like Phl p 1 and Phl p 5. The therapy involves controlled exposure to allergens, leading to increased IgG4 production, decreased hypersensitivity, and expansion of regulatory T cells, ultimately downregulating allergic inflammation. AIT can prevent new sensitizations and potentially progression from rhinitis to asthma.
Repeated exposure to allergen leads to increased allergen-specific IgG4, decreased IgE-mediated hypersensitivity, expansion of regulatory T cells (Tregs), and altered cytokine profiles (increased IL-10 and TGF-beta).
