Immunoglobulin A secretion describes the process by which IgA antibodies, produced by plasma cells in the lamina propria, are transported across epithelial cells and released as secretory IgA (sIgA) into mucosal surfaces, such as the gastrointestinal, respiratory, and genitourinary tracts. This is mediated by the polymeric immunoglobulin receptor (pIgR), which binds dimeric IgA and transcytoses it, with the secretory component protecting sIgA from degradation. sIgA acts as a primary barrier against pathogens by neutralizing toxins and viruses, trapping microbes in mucus, blocking receptor access, and downregulating inflammation. Its deficiency increases susceptibility to mucosal infections, and IgA or its receptors are of interest for therapeutic development, though no drugs currently target "IgA secretion" itself.
