Overview

Immunoglobulin E (IgE) and Immunoglobulin G (IgG) are antibody classes produced by plasma cells as part of the adaptive immune system. Allergen-specific IgE is pivotal in mediating Type I hypersensitivity (allergic) responses—when bound to allergens, it cross-links Fcε receptors on mast cells and basophils, leading to degranulation and allergic symptoms such as asthma, rhinitis, and anaphylaxis. Allergen-specific IgG, particularly IgG4, can block allergen–IgE interactions and plays a role in the natural resolution of allergies and the efficacy of immunotherapy. These antibodies are Y-shaped glycoproteins composed of two identical heavy and two identical light chains. Allergen-specific IgE and IgG serve as critical biomarkers for allergy diagnosis and monitoring immunotherapy, and IgE is a major target in anti-allergy biologics. Both types can contribute to disease when dysregulated, and may themselves be targets or mediators in therapy. If you require distinct canonical forms for structured database use, it is advisable to separate "Immunoglobulin E (IgE)" and "Immunoglobulin G (IgG)" and add "allergen-specific" as a qualifier, noting that each allergen-specific antibody is unique by antigenic specificity.
