Overview

Passive immunity through IgG antibodies is a therapeutic approach that involves the transfer or administration of immunoglobulin G to provide immediate, short-term protection against infectious agents and their toxins. This process does not engage the recipient's own immune system to learn or remember the pathogen, but confers protection by directly neutralizing pathogens, promoting their clearance, or inactivating toxins. This form of immune protection is used both naturally (e.g., maternal IgG transfer across the placenta) and artificially (e.g., antibody therapies after pathogen exposure or for immunocompromised patients). While effective for rapid protection, it is not long-lasting, can be costly, and is associated with risks such as allergic reactions or, rarely, transmission of other agents.
