Overview

Indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase (IDO) is a cytosolic, heme-containing enzyme that catalyzes the initial and rate-limiting step in the degradation of the essential amino acid tryptophan along the kynurenine pathway. It plays a critical role in immune regulation by depleting local tryptophan levels and generating immunomodulatory kynurenines. IDO is a therapeutic target in cancer, autoimmune diseases, and transplantation due to its role in suppressing T cell activity.
