Overview

Inflammatory cytokines are a broad class of small proteins secreted primarily by immune cells such as macrophages and T-helper cells in response to infection or tissue injury. Key pro-inflammatory members include interleukin‑6, interleukin‑12, interleukin‑17, interleukin‑21, and tumor necrosis factor-alpha. These molecules play central roles in amplifying the immune response by recruiting additional immune cells to sites of inflammation or damage. While essential for host defense against pathogens, excessive production can lead to chronic inflammatory diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis, Crohn’s disease, and others. Therapeutic strategies often involve neutralizing specific cytokines using monoclonal antibodies or receptor antagonists to restore balance within the immune system.
