The hemagglutinin (HA) antigen of Influenza A (H1N1) is a surface glycoprotein and the principal antigenic determinant of the influenza virus. It plays a central role in viral infectivity, host specificity, and immune recognition. HA binds sialic acid-containing receptors on host cell surfaces, initiating infection, and mediates membrane fusion for viral entry. Frequent mutations in HA lead to new variants requiring regular updates to seasonal influenza vaccines.
