Overview

The Influenza A virus H9 subtype, primarily represented by the H9N2 lineage, is a group of avian influenza viruses that are globally endemic in poultry and pose a significant threat to public health [CDC, 2023]. Although these viruses typically cause mild respiratory symptoms in birds, they are known for their zoonotic potential, frequently infecting humans who have direct contact with infected poultry [Peiris et al., 2001]. A critical feature of the H9 subtype is its role as a genetic reservoir, providing internal gene segments to other highly pathogenic avian influenza viruses such as H5N1 and H7N9 through reassortment [Li et al., 2020]. The virus relies on its Hemagglutinin (H9) protein for host cell attachment and its Neuraminidase (N2) enzyme for the release of progeny virions from the cell surface [NCBI, 2024]. Therapeutic strategies include the use of neuraminidase inhibitors like oseltamivir and polymerase inhibitors like baloxavir marboxil, though the effectiveness of older M2 ion channel blockers is compromised by widespread resistance [Sun and Liu, 2015]. Monitoring the evolution of this subtype is vital for pandemic preparedness and the development of effective vaccines [WHO, 2024].
