Overview

HIV-1 integrase is a viral enzyme essential for the replication of Human Immunodeficiency Virus type 1 (HIV-1). It catalyzes the integration of viral DNA into the host cell genome, a critical step that allows HIV to establish persistent infection and evade immune responses. This makes integrase an attractive target for antiretroviral drug development. Integrase acts after reverse transcription has produced double-stranded viral DNA: 3'-Processing, Strand Transfer, Repair & Integration Completion. Integrase inhibitors are a major class of antiretroviral drugs used to treat HIV/AIDS by blocking this enzyme’s activity—thereby preventing establishment or propagation of infection within new cells.
