It is composed primarily of ceramides, cholesterol, and free fatty acids, organized into multilamellar structures. This matrix is crucial for maintaining the skin's barrier function, preventing water loss, and protecting against external insults such as pathogens, toxins, and mechanical stress. Disruption of this matrix leads to skin disorders characterized by impaired barrier function.
