Overview

Interferon nu, pseudogene (IFNNP1) is a genomic sequence sharing homology with type I interferon genes (such as IFNα and IFNβ), but contains sequence alterations or defects that prevent production of a functional protein. Pseudogenes like IFNNP1 are considered evolutionary remnants and do not produce a functional cytokine. They are not therapeutic targets, do not encode a receptor, and are not involved in canonical biological functions attributed to active interferons[1][2]. While some pseudogenes can transcribe RNA or potentially have regulatory effects, there is currently no evidence that IFNNP1 produces a transcribed product or plays a direct biological role[2]. It is included among the cluster of type I interferon pseudogenes on human chromosome 9[1]. Key clarification: This entry represents a pseudogene, not a functional protein or therapeutic target. It does not encode a product that can be targeted by drugs and is not involved in disease or therapeutic mechanisms[1][2].
