The intestinal lumen (osmotic effect) refers to the physiological process by which osmotic gradients within the intestinal lumen influence water movement across the intestinal epithelium. This mechanism is central to fluid balance in the gut and underlies both normal absorption and certain types of diarrhea. It is not a molecular target, but a process governed by the concentration of solutes within the lumen.
Passive water movement across the intestinal epithelium driven by osmotic gradients created by differing solute concentrations in the lumen relative to the blood/interstitium. High luminal solute concentration draws water into the lumen, while low solute concentration allows water to be absorbed.
