Overview

Intestinal lumen water retention via the osmotic effect refers to the process by which water is held within the intestinal lumen due to the presence of osmotically active substances. These substances, such as unabsorbed carbohydrates (e.g., lactose in lactose intolerance), certain ions, or poorly absorbed solutes, create an osmotic gradient that prevents water from being absorbed into enterocytes and instead draws additional water into the lumen. This mechanism is central to both normal physiology (hydration of mucosa) and pathophysiological states like osmotic diarrhea.
