Iodine Atoms (in Iodinated Contrast Agents)

Molecular classification
Element, Contrast Agent
01

Overview

Iodine atoms, incorporated into contrast agents, are used to enhance radiographic images. Due to iodine's high atomic number (Z=53), it strongly absorbs X-rays, particularly at its k-edge (33.2 keV), through the photoelectric effect. This increased absorption leads to greater attenuation of X-rays in areas where the contrast agent is present, thereby enhancing contrast between different tissues or structures on radiographic images, especially in CT and angiography. The iodine is delivered via organic molecules like iohexol, iodixanol and ioversol. Safety considerations include potential allergic reactions and risks associated with renal function.
