AMPA and kainate receptors are subtypes of ionotropic glutamate receptors that mediate fast excitatory synaptic transmission in the central nervous system. They are tetrameric complexes composed of various GluA and GluK subunits, respectively. Activation by glutamate leads to ion channel opening and neuronal depolarization, playing crucial roles in synaptic plasticity, learning, and memory. Their function is also shaped by auxiliary proteins and neuromodulators. Selective targeting of these receptors is being explored for treating various neurological and psychiatric disorders.
