Overview

Iron, in its ferrous form (Fe²⁺), is an essential mineral and a key biological target involved in oxygen transport, cellular respiration, and numerous enzymatic processes. It is commonly administered as ferrous salts (e.g., ferrous sulfate) to treat or prevent iron deficiency anemia. It plays a critical role in hemoglobin and myoglobin, as well as acting as a cofactor for various enzymes. Absorption is tightly regulated due to the potential toxicity of excess free iron. Iron metabolism is also a therapeutic target in cancer research.
