Overview

Kaptin, actin binding protein (KPTN) is a conserved cytoskeletal protein that binds to actin, a core component of the cellular cytoskeleton. It regulates actin filament dynamics, which are crucial for processes such as cellular motility and the development and maintenance of neuronal structures. KPTN mutations are associated with a rare neurodevelopmental disorder (KPTN-related disorder) that includes macrocephaly, intellectual disability, and autism-like features. Kaptin is not a traditional drug target (such as receptor or enzyme), but its dysfunction implicates cytoskeletal regulation in brain development and function. No drugs are currently known to interact directly with kaptin, and it is not classified as a canonical therapeutic target like kinases, GPCRs, or receptors. Its biological relevance is primarily in basic cell biology and rare genetic disorders.
