Overview

KCNQ5 antisense RNA 1 (KCNQ5-AS1) is a long non-coding RNA located in the human genome near the KCNQ5 gene, for which it is named as an antisense transcript. Unlike protein-coding genes, KCNQ5-AS1 does not encode a protein; instead, its transcripts may play roles in regulating gene expression through mechanisms typical for lncRNAs, such as chromatin modulation, transcriptional interference, or RNA stability regulation. There is limited functional characterization in literature, with associations to tissue-specific expression or gene regulation inferred from genomic datasets. There is currently no evidence that KCNQ5-AS1 is a druggable therapeutic target, nor are there direct links between KCNQ5-AS1 and major diseases, distinguishing it from the protein-coding KCNQ5 potassium channel gene. Do not confuse KCNQ5-AS1 (non-coding RNA) with KCNQ5 (potassium channel protein), which is a bona fide therapeutic target in neurology and ophthalmology. KCNQ5-AS1 remains primarily of functional and genomic research interest, not direct clinical relevance at this time.

Biological functions

Regulation of gene expression (as an antisense RNA, it may modulate KCNQ5 or other gene transcription, though specific functions remain to be clarified)
03

Disease associations

Other (no direct data on disease association for KCNQ5-AS1 specifically; the protein-coding KCNQ5 gene itself is associated with neurological disorders, but there is no concrete evidence of disease roles for KCNQ5-AS1)
