Overview

Keratin, type I cuticular Ha1 (KRT31), is an acidic intermediate filament protein predominately expressed in hair follicles and nails. It is essential for the structural integrity and mechanical strength of hair, forming heterodimers with type II keratins in the hair cortex. KRT31 is clustered with other type I hair keratins on chromosome 17 and is critical for ectodermal appendage formation. Loss or mutation of KRT31 impairs hair strength and is associated with genetic conditions such as monilethrix, a congenital hair disorder, and it may serve as a biomarker for epithelial differentiation in contexts like oral dysplasia. While commercially utilized in cosmetic products for hair repair, KRT31 itself is not considered a classic therapeutic target such as a receptor or enzyme[1][2][3][4][5].
