Keratin, type I cuticular Ha3-I (KRT33A)

Target
KRT33A
Molecular classification
Intermediate filament protein, Type I (acidic) keratin, Cytoskeletal protein
01

Overview

Keratin, type I cuticular Ha3-I (KRT33A) is a member of the keratin gene family and encodes a type I (acidic) hair keratin protein[1]. It is primarily expressed in hair and nails, where it heterodimerizes with type II keratins to form structural intermediate filaments critical for the formation and mechanical properties of hair and nail[1]. This gene is clustered with other type I hair keratin genes on human chromosome 17q21.2 and is distinct from its closely related isoform, KRT33B, by being encoded by a separate gene[1]. The main biological role of KRT33A is its contribution to the structural integrity of hair fibers; no evidence currently exists for its direct role as a therapeutic target, disease biomarker, or drug interaction.
