Overview

Keratin, type I cuticular Ha5 (KRT35) is a protein-coding gene and member of the keratin gene family. It encodes a type I acidic hair keratin that forms heterodimers with type II keratins to build the structural matrix of hair and nails. Found in epithelial tissues, it provides mechanical strength and resilience to hair fibers, contributing to their protective and structural properties. Mutations in KRT35 have been associated with disorders affecting hair and nail morphogenesis, such as ectodermal dysplasia and pilomatrix carcinoma. As a structural protein, KRT35 is not typically targeted by drugs nor used directly as a therapeutic biomarker, but plays a crucial role in epithelial biology through filament organization and differentiation
