Keratin, type I cuticular Ha8 (KRT38)

Target
KRT38
Molecular classification
Cytoskeletal protein, Type I keratin, Intermediate filament protein
01

Overview

Keratin, type I cuticular Ha8 (KRT38) is a member of the keratin gene family coding for a type I acidic keratin protein. It is asymmetrically distributed in human hair follicles and forms heterodimers with type II keratins, contributing to intermediate filament (IF) assembly in hair and the cytoskeleton of epithelial cells. KRT38 does not have orthologs in mice or horses and is not directly implicated in human disease or targeted by drugs[1][3]. It primarily provides structural integrity and resilience to hair fibers and is not considered a receptor, enzyme, or transporter. Its main function is mechanical, supporting hair morphology[1][2].
