Keratin, type I cytoskeletal 13 (KRT13), also known as cytokeratin 13, is an acidic type I intermediate filament protein mainly expressed in the suprabasal layers of non-cornified stratified squamous epithelia, particularly in the mucosal linings of the mouth, nose, esophagus, genitals, and anus[1][2][6]. It forms filaments by heterodimerizing with keratin 4, providing mechanical strength and resilience to epithelial tissues against physical stress[1][2][3]. Mutations in KRT13 are causative for white sponge nevus, a benign inherited disorder characterized by thickened white mucosal patches, particularly in the oral cavity[1][6]. Altered expression and function of KRT13 is observed in various epithelial cancers, making it valuable as a diagnostic and prognostic biomarker[4][5][6]. Although KRT13 plays a role in tissue differentiation, homeostasis, and possibly cancer biology, it is not considered a classical therapeutic target such as a receptor, enzyme, or transporter[1][4][5][6].
