Overview

Keratin, type I cytoskeletal 26 (KRT26) is a member of the type I keratin family, which are acidic proteins forming intermediate filaments in the cytoskeleton of epithelial cells. KRT26 is specifically expressed in the inner root sheath of hair follicles, contributing to hair structure and differentiation. It is located in a gene cluster on human chromosome 17q21 together with other keratins. KRT26's primary cellular function is to provide structural integrity to hair follicle cells. Pathological alterations in KRT26 have been associated with diseases such as anal canal squamous cell carcinoma and regular astigmatism, but it is not considered a direct therapeutic target or clinical biomarker. The protein's function is primarily structural, distinguishing it from receptor, enzyme, or transporter targets commonly involved in drug development.
