KRT72
Molecular classification

01

Overview

Keratin, type II cytoskeletal 72 (KRT72) is a member of the type II keratin family of intermediate filament cytoskeletal proteins, specifically expressed in the inner root sheath of hair follicles, where it contributes to hair structure and formation [2][3][5]. KRT72 forms part of the cytoskeletal network that provides mechanical strength to epithelial cells and plays a critical role in the differentiation of keratinizing cells during hair development [2]. Recent research also suggests KRT72 participates in antiviral defense by binding and sequestering incoming HIV-1 capsids in the cytoplasm of resting CD4+ T cells, impeding viral trafficking and infection at a postentry stage [1]. There is currently no documentation of KRT72 acting as a therapeutic target, receptor, enzyme, transporter, or biomarker in clinical practice.
