Keratin associated protein 9-12, pseudogene (KRTAP9-12P)

Target
KRTAP9-12P
Molecular classification
Other, Pseudogene (not a protein-coding gene, not a receptor, enzyme, transporter, or transcription factor)

Overview

Keratin associated protein 9-12, pseudogene (KRTAP9-12P) is a non-functional genetic locus in humans that belongs to the keratin-associated protein (KAP) gene family, which contains both protein-coding members and numerous pseudogenes[1][4]. The canonical KAP proteins serve as components of the structural matrix surrounding hair keratin intermediate filaments, influencing the physical properties of hair[2][4][6]; however, KRTAP9-12P itself lacks protein-coding potential and does not produce a functional product, nor is it involved in any known biological process or disease pathway[1][3][5]. General nomenclature for the KAP gene family includes this pseudogene notation (with “P” indicating pseudogene status)[4][6].

Biological functions

OtherNo known functional role because it is a pseudogene; functional keratin-associated proteins contribute to hair and wool structure, but pseudogenes are not expressed as functional proteins
03

Disease associations

OtherNo established association with disease; pseudogenes generally do not participate directly in disease processes
