Overview

Kidney yang deficiency (KYD) is a systemic syndrome in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) that describes a state of metabolic and endocrine hypofunction, rather than a single molecular target. It is characterized by the depletion of Yang energy, which is responsible for warming, transformation, and activation within the body. Modern research identifies KYD as a multi-systemic disorder involving the dysregulation of the neuroendocrine-immune (NEI) network, particularly the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA), hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG), and hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid (HPT) axes (Shen et al., 2011, PubMed). Clinical manifestations include cold intolerance, fatigue, and sexual dysfunction, which are treated using herbal formulas like Jin-Gui-Shen-Qi-Wan that aim to restore hormonal and metabolic homeostasis. Pharmacological studies suggest these interventions act by modulating cyclic nucleotide levels (cAMP/cGMP ratio) and enhancing mitochondrial energy production (Zhao et al., 2013, Journal of Ethnopharmacology). This syndrome is often used as a model for studying the biological basis of TCM patterns and their response to multi-component herbal therapies.
