Kinesin family member 19 (KIF19), also known as KIF19A, is a plus-end-directed microtubule motor protein belonging to the kinesin-8 family [1, 3]. It plays a critical role in regulating the length of motile cilia by depolymerizing microtubules at the ciliary tips in an ATP-dependent manner [2, 4]. This regulation is essential for maintaining proper ciliary function and fluid flow in various organs, including the brain ventricles, oviducts, and respiratory tract [5, 10]. Deficiencies in KIF19A lead to abnormally elongated cilia, which are associated with conditions such as hydrocephalus and female infertility [2, 8]. Beyond its role in ciliogenesis, KIF19A has been implicated in cancer progression, where it may influence cell adhesion and promote invasion and metastasis [3, 9]. While specific therapeutic agents targeting KIF19A are still in early research stages, its unique dual function as both a motor and a depolymerase makes it a target of interest for treating ciliopathies and certain malignancies [5, 11].
